Sedona Travel Status

Is Sedona Safe to Visit Right Now?

Short answer: yes. The town of Sedona — Uptown, West Sedona, and the red-rock attractions in and around town — is open and operating normally. The Pocket Fire is burning in the national forest wilderness about 7 miles north of Sedona, in the national forest wilderness in and above Oak Creek Canyon. It has not reached the town, and Sedona is not under any evacuation order. The real impact for visitors is the closure of the Oak Creek Canyon corridor north of town, and the chance of smoke on some days.

Pocket Fire

Location
about 7 miles north of Sedona, in the national forest wilderness in and above Oak Creek Canyon

Firefighting crews are working a full-suppression effort in steep, remote terrain, and officials have said containment will take time. Critical fire weather is possible over the weekend, so conditions north of town can change quickly — which is exactly why we keep this page dated and point you to the official sources below rather than asking you to take our word for it.

Our thoughts are with the Oak Creek Canyon residents who were evacuated and the crews working the fire.

What’s open vs. what’s affected

Open & operating

  • The town of Sedona — Uptown, West Sedona, restaurants and shops
  • Red-rock attractions in and around town (south & west of the fire)
  • Our homes and the neighborhoods they sit in
  • Sedona Airport, galleries, and the main SR 179 corridor

Affected & to avoid

  • State Route 89A north of town — the Oak Creek Canyon scenic drive and the route to Flagstaff
  • Slide Rock State Park, West Fork, and the Oak Creek Canyon swimming holes & campgrounds
  • Devil’s Bridge access via Dry Creek Road, plus forest trails near the fire
  • Smoke and haze on some days, and changing conditions over the weekend
