Sedona Travel Status

Is Sedona Safe to Visit Right Now?

Short answer: yes — and the news keeps getting better. The town of Sedona has been open and operating normally throughout, and as of July 13 the scenic SR 89A drive through Oak Creek Canyon is open again in both directions. The Pocket Fire never reached town, no structures were damaged, and crews have shifted from suppression to cleanup. The only things to know: some forest trails and campgrounds in the fire footprint remain closed, and there are minor weekday lane restrictions on 89A for a guardrail project.

Fire
Pocket Fire
Started

Size
27,393 acres, 83% contained (as of July 14)
Location
about 7 miles north of Sedona, in the national forest wilderness in and above Oak Creek Canyon

The fire is winding down. SR 89A reopened July 13, all evacuation advisories have been lifted back to “Ready,” and officials issued their final daily update on July 14 as crews shift from suppression to repair and cleanup. No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported. A temporary forest closure remains for trails and campsites within and around the fire footprint — check the official sources below before heading to a trailhead in that area.

Our thanks to the crews who worked the fire, and to the Oak Creek Canyon community — the canyon is open again and welcoming visitors.

What’s open vs. what’s affected

Open & operating

  • The town of Sedona — Uptown, West Sedona, restaurants and shops
  • SR 89A through Oak Creek Canyon — the scenic drive to Flagstaff reopened July 13
  • Red-rock attractions in and around town, and the main SR 179 corridor
  • Our homes and the neighborhoods they sit in — open throughout the fire

Affected & to avoid

  • Some forest trails, campgrounds and day-use sites in and around the fire footprint — including parts of Oak Creek Canyon — while cleanup continues
  • Weekday lane restrictions on SR 89A between Pine Flat Campground and Oak Creek Vista (guardrail project, Mon–Thu)
  • Occasional fire-response traffic and brief intermittent closures as crews finish suppression repair
