People come to Sedona for one thing first: the rocks. Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Coffee Pot, Thunder Mountain, the whole ring of red sandstone that turns orange at sunrise and deep purple at dusk. A vacation home with a real view means you see that show from the hot tub, the deck and the breakfast table instead of driving to a trailhead for it.

Not every Sedona rental has a view, and listing photos can be generous. West Sedona views tend to be wider and quieter. Uptown views come with the town at your feet and shops within walking distance. Both are a few minutes from the trailheads.

Know Before You Go

The formations around town double as landmarks: Thunder Mountain (also called Capitol Butte) and Coffee Pot Rock above West Sedona, Snoopy Rock and Wilson Mountain above Uptown, and Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte by the Village of Oak Creek. The rock glows deepest in the last hour before sunset. Airport Mesa overlook is the well-known place to watch it, and its small parking lot fills early.

Uptown Sedona is the walkable center of town along Highway 89A, where Oak Creek runs below the red rocks. Main Street has the shops, galleries, restaurants and tour offices, and Tlaquepaque Arts and Shopping Village sits just south of the roundabout at the Y. From the homes closest to Main Street, dinner is a walk; from the rest, it is a short drive.

Tip: The free Sedona Shuttle runs Thursday through Sunday, and daily in some peak periods, from park-and-ride lots to Cathedral Rock, Soldier Pass, Dry Creek Vista (for Devil's Bridge), Mescal and Little Horse. While it runs, the Cathedral Rock and Soldier Pass trailhead lots are closed to the public, so plan to ride it on those days. Check the current schedule before you go.

West Sedona runs along Highway 89A west of the Y, below Thunder Mountain (also called Capitol Butte) and Coffee Pot Rock. It is where locals shop, with the town's larger grocery stores, casual restaurants and coffee, and it is quieter than Uptown while sitting closer to the trailheads on the west side of town.

Tip: Many trailheads around Sedona require a Red Rock Pass (or an America the Beautiful pass) displayed in your car. Buy one online or at a trailhead kiosk before you park. During shuttle operating hours, including additional peak-period service, the Soldier Pass and Cathedral Rock lots are closed, so take the free Sedona Shuttle to those trails.

The Village of Oak Creek sits south of central Sedona on Highway 179, beside Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte. It has its own grocery store, restaurants and golf, and it is the first part of Sedona you reach on the drive up from Phoenix.

Getting here: Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport is about 2 hours by car, and Flagstaff is about 45 minutes through Oak Creek Canyon. Sedona sits at about 4,350 feet. Drive times are approximate and run longer on busy weekend afternoons.

Why is Sedona Dream not on this page?
Because we describe it by what it does best, which is location. It is a short walk from Uptown shops and restaurants with a 30x15 heated pool, hot tub and sauna, and we would rather you choose it for that than for a view we do not lead with.
Are West Sedona or Uptown views better?

When is the light best on the red rocks?
First light and the last hour before sunset. The rocks face different directions, so Cathedral Rock is a sunset formation while much of the Uptown skyline lights up at sunrise. A home with a view lets you catch both without leaving the deck.
